Financiële professionals krijgen in toenemende mate te maken met AI-hulpmiddelen. We staan aan de vooravond van belangrijke veranderingen in hun vakgebied. Terwijl auditors, controllers en financiële medewerkers jarenlang gevangen zaten in de „Excel-hel” van oneindige spreadsheets, biedt AI nu een uitweg. Maar het gaat niet alleen om slim prompten („prompt engineering”) — de echte kracht ligt in „context engineering”.Finance professionals are increasingly encountering AI tools. AI kan voor deze beroepsgroep een serieuze game-changer zijn, omdat ze tot nu toe veroordeeld was tot het bouwen van spreadsheet op spreadsheet op spreadsheet… (lees: de „Excel-hel”). Het integreren van de nieuwe AI-technologie in het vakgebied is echter nog niet zo eenvoudig. De technologie is jong en aan (hevige) veranderingen onderhevig. Het blijft in veel gevallen bij het slim prompten van LLM’s, ook wel het „prompt engineeren” van large language models genoemd, terwijl het zou moeten gaan over „context engineering”.AI can be a serious game-changer for this profession, which until now was condemned to building spreadsheet upon spreadsheet upon spreadsheet… (read: ‘Excel hell’). Integrating the new AI technology into the field, however, is not that simple. The technology is young and subject to (rapid) change. In many cases it does not get beyond cleverly prompting LLMs — ‘prompt engineering’ of large language models — when the conversation should really be about ‘context engineering’.
Context engineering
Context engineering is het ontwerpen van systemen die bepalen welke informatie een AI-model te zien krijgt voordat het een reactie genereert. Je kunt het zien als het „geheugenbeheer” van de AI. Dat gaat véél verder dan een individuele prompt. Het geheugen dat LLM’s ter beschikking hebben, het zogenoemde „context window”, is beperkt. En zomaar alles in één prompt proppen draagt niet bij aan de kwaliteit van de oplossing of het antwoord. De crux is dus om dat geheugen te vullen met zinvolle en relevante kennis voor het oplossen van het probleem of het beantwoorden van de vraag. Dit is het terrein waarop „context engineers” actief zijn.Context engineering is the design of systems that determine which information an AI model gets to see before it generates a response. Think of it as the AI’s ‘memory management’. That goes fár beyond an individual prompt. The memory available to LLMs, the so-called ‘context window’, is limited. And simply cramming everything into one prompt does nothing for the quality of the solution or the answer. The crux, then, is to fill that memory with meaningful, relevant knowledge for solving the problem or answering the question. This is the territory where ‘context engineers’ operate.

Dit klinkt natuurlijk behoorlijk abstract. Toch staat context engineering veel dichter bij de vakbroeders binnen de groep auditors, controllers en financiële medewerkers dan ze zelf wellicht denken. Zij hebben juist de diepgaande kennis die nodig is om de (financiële) context van de organisatie te doorgronden! Het ontsluiten van die kennis is de sleutel tot het productief inzetten van AI. Yet context engineering is much closer to the professionals in the group of auditors, controllers and finance staff than they might think. They are precisely the ones with the deep knowledge needed to fathom the (financial) context of the organisation! Unlocking that knowledge is the key to deploying AI productively. Met context en prompts waarover wij de regie voeren. Dit is best een uitdaging. Maar het biedt ons en onze klanten de vrijheid, zekerheid en flexibiliteit die nodig is om AI optimaal in te zetten. Optimaal is daarbij met nadruk niet altijd synoniem met „effectief”. Het gaat ook om zaken als efficiency, privacy, security, ESG en wet- en regelgeving!We have our own ideas about how to do this. Not at third parties, but on our own machines that we manage ourselves. With models that we choose. With software components that we prefer. With context and prompts over which we hold the reins. That is quite a challenge. But it gives us and our clients the freedom, certainty and flexibility needed to deploy AI optimally. Optimal, mind you, is not always synonymous with ‘effective’. It is also about efficiency, privacy, security, ESG and laws and regulations!
