Grote kans dat je al dagelijks met een AI-assistent werkt. Je stelt een vraag, je krijgt een antwoord. Voor algemene kennis werkt dat verrassend goed. Tot je iets vraagt dat over je eigen organisatie gaat. Een offerte in de eigen huisstijl. Een antwoord uit het eigen handboek. Hulp bij een inschrijving op een aanbesteding.Chances are you already work with an AI assistant every day. You ask a question, you get an answer. For general knowledge that works surprisingly well. Until you ask something about your own organisation. A quote in your own house style. An answer from your own manual. Help with a bid for a tender.
Daar houdt het op. De assistent kent je huisstijl niet, heeft je documenten nooit gezien en weet niets van je werkprocessen. Wat hij daarover beweert, verzint hij ter plekke. Wie meer wil dan algemene antwoorden, moet de assistent dus toegang geven tot de eigen omgeving. En precies daar zat lange tijd het probleem: zomaar toegang geven is onverstandig. En voor elke combinatie van assistent en systeem een eigen koppeling bouwen is duur en kwetsbaar.That is where it stops. The assistant does not know your house style, has never seen your documents and knows nothing about your working processes. Whatever it claims about them, it makes up on the spot. Anyone who wants more than general answers therefore has to give the assistant access to their own environment. And that is exactly where the problem sat for a long time: simply granting access is unwise. And building a separate connection for every combination of assistant and system is expensive and fragile.

That model is rented by everyone from the same handful of providers. In the diagram it therefore hangs as a separate block above the assistant: it thinks along, but it is not yours.

Eén stekker in plaats van tien koppelingenOne plug instead of ten connections
Dat is waar MCP voor is bedacht. Het Model Context Protocol is een open standaard, eind 2024 geïntroduceerd door AI-bedrijf Anthropic en vrijgegeven voor iedereen. Inmiddels wordt het gedragen door vrijwel alle grote AI-omgevingen. Het idee is simpel: één afgesproken taal waarmee een assistent kennis en gereedschap van buiten kan gebruiken. Wie iets aanbiedt, zet er één MCP-server voor neer; elke assistent die de standaard spreekt, kan er terecht. Vandaar de stekker in de plaat: die is uniform en past overal.That is what MCP was designed for. The Model Context Protocol is an open standard, introduced by AI company Anthropic in late 2024 and released for everyone. By now it is carried by virtually all major AI environments. The idea is simple: one agreed language through which an assistant can use outside knowledge and tools. Whoever offers something sets up a single MCP server for it; every assistant that speaks the standard can use it. Hence the plug in the diagram: it is uniform and fits everywhere.

Connecting means: entering an address and a personal access token in your AI environment. That is the whole job. A few minutes, no installation, no software from us. From then on your assistant uses the solution as if it were a built-in skill: you ask questions in your own words and the assistant finds that skill by itself. De poort blijft dicht zonder tokenThe gateway stays shut without a token
Een stekker die overal past, roept meteen de goede vraag op: wie mag die stekker dan gebruiken, toch niet iedereen? Daarom staat tussen de standaard en de oplossingen een poort. Onze MCP-servers draaien namelijk op een beveiligde server van WIDE, met per oplossing een eigen adres. Toegang is uitsluitend mogelijk met een persoonlijk token dat wij enkel op aanvraag uitgeven; het is op elk moment in te trekken en elke aanroep loopt versleuteld en wordt gelogd. Zonder token bestaat de server voor een buitenstaander eenvoudigweg niet.A plug that fits everywhere immediately raises the right question: who gets to use that plug, surely not everyone? That is why a gateway stands between the standard and the solutions. Our MCP servers run on a secure WIDE server, with a dedicated address per solution. Access is only possible with a personal token that we issue solely on request; it can be revoked at any moment, and every call runs encrypted and is logged. Without a token, the server simply does not exist for an outsider.

Voor de duidelijkheid moeten we een paar nuchtere kanttekeningen plaatsen. MCP is een jonge standaard: vrijwel elke grote AI-omgeving ondersteunt hem, maar hoe ver die ondersteuning reikt verschilt per omgeving en verandert snel. En een koppeling maakt een assistent niet onfeilbaar. De oplossingen leggen werkwijzen en controles vast, tonen bronnen en vragen op de juiste momenten om jouw akkoord; het oordeel blijft bij de mens. Voor wie vaker op deze site komt, is dat een bekend patroon: niet het model maakt het verschil, wel wat eromheen is gebouwd.For clarity, we should make a few sober remarks. MCP is a young standard: virtually every major AI environment supports it, but how far that support reaches differs per environment and changes quickly. And a connection does not make an assistant infallible. The solutions capture methods and checks, show sources and ask for your approval at the right moments; the judgement stays with the human. For those who visit this site more often, that is a familiar pattern: it is not the model that makes the difference, it is what is built around it.
